    Get PDF

Combining Operative Train Simulation with Logistics Simulation in SUMO

    Get PDF
Rail freight logistics is usually planned and analyzed using a macroscopic aggregated view on railway networks and train operations. As a result, disjoint tools have developed for simulating train operations which requires a detailed representation of track assets as well as the signaling architecture and supply chain networks in logistics analyzing the flow of goods where mode-specific capacity and traffic situations are incorporated in an aggregated manner. However, integrating the two areas could help evaluating railway-specific operative implications (such as conflicts and consequent delays) on the level of transport chains and thus single transport units instead of trains or network areas. The simulation tool SUMO is identified to meet criteria from both disciplines. It is shown how a respective methodology can be realized in SUMO to create such a simulation model. A use case of northwestern Germany shows by the means of exemplary container trajectories that the two simulative approaches can be merged

Optimizing rollout strategies for migration to moving block signaling – A MINLP-based approach for on-board train integrity monitoring technology

    Get PDF
Increasing demand on heavily-used rail corridors in line with the modernization of the signaling architecture are key drivers for migrating to modern, moving-block based train control in the European railway network. In order to maximally profit from the increase of reliability and reduction of costs associated with shifting towards full ETCS Level 3 from a network management perspective, additional requirements on the fleet management level arise. Amongst other things, if track vacancy detection equipment is to be eliminated, all trains operating on these lines need to be equipped with on-board train integrity (OTI) monitoring solutions. In order to facilitate the planning of the OTI network migration processes, a MINLP-model is proposed which allows economic optimization of OTI migration in view of fleet allocation and the removal of trackside equipment for train integrity verification within the network. The model is tested in a case-study based on a generic network abstracted from the Austrian mainline network and found to significantly enhance planning compared to heuristic migration strategies

Traffic impact on last mile parcel delivery with cargo bikes

    Get PDF
In the course of global warming, low-emission last mile delivery concepts are being discussed as alternatives to conventional concepts. Complementing the logistical perspective, this study evaluates the impact of surrounding traffic on parcel delivery with cargo bikes. We propose a scenario-based methodological approach including an agentbased, multimodal simulation analysis. The approach includes the identification of infrastructural potential for cargo bike route shortcuts as well as effects of provider-joint collaboration. Key findings from a use case in the city of Hamburg, Germany, show similar traffic impact on delivery with cargo bikes and vans according to simulation KPIs such as time loss and mean speed. However, significantly lower CO2 emissions for cargo bike scenarios are observed as well as considerable synergy effects in collaboration scenarios

Effects of different mobility concepts in new residential areas

    Get PDF
Growing cities need new residential areas, which are often either not connected to the existing transport infrastructure or are poorly connected to it. A fast way to connect these areas is the construction of roads. However, this generates a car- depending mobility among the inhabitants, which is in conflict with several sustainability goals. Moreover, the impact of the implementation of new public transport options is only partly known and this fact reduces the willingness to invest in expensive public transport measures. In this work we examine different mobility concepts, including shared mobility, bicycle highways, a high-frequency bus service, suburban trains and car limitations in a new residential area of 2000 households in Berlin, Germany, which is currently under construction. The households and inhabitants are created synthetically using statistical data derived from a survey among the first people moved in. The age and size structure of these households turn out to be different from the neighbouring households. Then, we implement all measures in a microscopic travel demand simulation and quantify the potential modal shifts for four different mobility concepts. The results show that weak and short-term mobility concepts show no significant change in mobility behaviour. Only highly integrated projects like bicycle highways into the inner city combined with suburban trains can reduce the need for car-dependent mobility. Shared mobility only fills in the gaps for special occasions but not for daily mobility due to the high costs. In a final step we examine the usage of the introduced public transport services and compare the change in the occupation of the buses and trains. Here our work shows that interchanging from bus to subways and suburban trains drastically reduces the attractiveness of public transport. Introducing a new suburban train changes this situation and the whole region shows a drop of 40% of car trips

Migrationsstrategie für eine fahrzeugseitige Zugvollständigkeitskontrolle / Roll-out strategy for on-board train integrity migration

EN: Within the Shift2Rail (S2R) project X2Rail-4 the development of on-board train integrity (OTI) solutions have been accompanied with an outlook on migration strategies for the roll-out. The optimization criterion for the migration was defined as the potential savings from the dismantling of infrastructure elements and their operating costs that become obsolete as a result of OTI. An optimisation model was developed to determine the order of roll-out and an economic analysis was performed to assess the different migration paths

    X2Rail-4 D7.2 - OTI Technology Migration

    Get PDF
The aim of the work was to look at the introduction of On-board train integrity (OTI) from different perspectives. Different OTI product classes are considered in their areas of application as well as the various railway market segments, with particular attention being paid to the freight transport sector, as this is particularly complex in terms of optimised wagon equipment due to single wagon traffic. To accompany the development of the on-board train integrity solutions up to TRL7, an outlook on the technology migration of the OTI is given. The work aimed at is to identify optimised migration paths for the rollout of OTI technology. To achieve this, boundary conditions are analysed in terms of surrounding migration strategies in the control and signalling of railway transport as well as migration conditions for the different market segments. Based on the technology specifications from the X2Rail-2 and X2Rail-4 projects, representative scenarios have been defined to apply the migration strategy. An optimization methodology was developed and computationally modelled and then applied to a railway network with an operating program. Based on the results of the optimization model, an economic evaluation of the different OTI migration strategies was performed. Life cycle cost analysis has been done to compare monetary effects of the different migration paths as well as the effects for different stakeholder

EN: The majority of multiple units in the German local rail passenger transport system have the Scharfenberg coupler type 10, which mostly allows mechanical and pneumatic coupling. Due to a lack of standardization, electric couplers and control technology are largely incompatible, so that coupled operation of different vehicle series is not possible or only possible to a limited extent. Unrestricted couplability of multiple units could open up great potential in daily operation. For this analysis, the technical measures required for multi-couplability were investigated, as well as how regulatory adjustments could be designed and what operational effects can be expected as a result. Initial results show that multicouplability can increase the number of direct connections. In addition, operational flexibility can be increased through the alternating use of vehicles. However, the coupling time within the stations and the associated track occupation time of the train pose a major challenge
